Normal tensions bass strings on altoguitar ? 8 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
Hello fellow altoguitar players.

Does someone in here have any experience in normal tension strings on the added (extra) five bass strings on a 11 strings altoguitar ?

I have by mistake bought 10 extra bass strings E6 but forgot all abouth the hard and extra hard tension and just ordered normal tension

Thank you.
Anders.

Hello, Anders,
A lot depends on your scale length, 57 or 55 cm. If 57, I would be inclined to stay with normal tension, as these do raise tension slightly above the playing value of the E6 bass on a 65 scale. The hard and extra hard will increase this extra force on the bridge. While the extra force will give you a stronger bass, i.e., you may or may not welcome the tendency for a stringer bass, as it may unbalance the bass/treble relationship, and there is always the danger of damage to the bridge adhesion over time. However, most makers ensure there is some reserve in bridge adhesion to deal with modest changes in string tension.
James.

"Normal" tension varies from brand to brand. Normal tension Hannabach are like high tension D'Addario.

If you're talking about D'Addario, normal tension will be fine. Whatever brand they are, just put them on and try them. If they're too low tension you'll feel it when your right hand plucks the string. It'll feel overly loose.

I like D'Addario normal tension basses.

Hi Anders,

I use normal tension Savarez for my bass strings, and I like it.
