How to capo 8th string at the nut 1 Year, 7 Months ago Karma: 3
I have been trying to think of a way that one could make a built-in capo device that would allow you to capo the 8th string at the nut, effectively making the nut extend over 8 strings instead of just 7.

One idea might be a wing screw device. What I'm wondering is whether that would necessitate inserting a sleeve into the soundboard at the nut level where the wing screw would be inserted. As you turn the screw it pushes the string down.

The ideal solution would be to have a luthier remove the extension for the 8th string and making a new nut that goes across 8 strings. But that is too much surgery. Thus the concept of just capoing that one string, hopefully with some sort of built-in capo device.

Needless to say, the reason for doing this is because there are many times where it would be convenient or necessary to fret the 8th string.

Any ideas?

Edit: Here's an interesting idea. See the picture at the bottom of the page.

Doing some research on this since my original post, I see that banjo players have used spikes nailed into the fingerboard for a long time. Once installed, it looks like a good way to go. You merely insert the string under the head of the spike to hold it down, thus capoing the string at that fret. Here is one place they are sold.

Here is a good video of how to install them, although I would probably elect to have a luthier do the job.

There are also a couple 1-string capos on the market that might work, although they're intended for a banjo's 5th string, which is steel and has a very thin diameter. Here is one.

The forum seems a bit slow now. I already replied to this but it never showed.

I can understand your concern, James. However, the spike is something very common for banjo players. Their 5th string is shorter than the rest, so if they capo the rest they need a way to capo the 5th higher up. I think it's a simple way to go, assuming it gets installed well. One of the links I put was a video showing the proper way to drill a tiny hole before hammering in the nail spike.

I just tried tying string around the neck at that point, going under all the strings except the 8th. To my astonishment, it worked. The only thing is that it's sort of tacky, and the 8th string sounded slightly less robust than the other basses. It needs to be pushed down harder than the string could manage. But it definitely DID work.

Hello Glen

I Think I have parts for a 1-string capo or a idea how to make it work.
